This stage adaptation of Number the Stars, based on Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal-winning novel, brings to life a poignant tale of courage and friendship during World War II. Set in Nazi-occupied Copenhagen, the play follows young Annemarie Johansen and her family as they risk everything to protect their Jewish friend Ellen Rosen from the Nazis. The story begins with Annemarie and Ellen, inseparable schoolmates, enjoying carefree moments in the streets of Copenhagen. However, their world is upended when Nazi soldiers begin rounding up Jewish citizens. Ellen’s family is in immediate danger, and the Johansens devise a plan to help them escape. Uncle Henrik, a fisherman and member of the Danish Resistance, agrees to hide Ellen and her family on his boat, smuggling them to safety in Sweden. Throughout the journey, Annemarie and her family confront soldiers, fierce dogs, and the constant threat of discovery, relying on their bravery and quick thinking to navigate these perilous challenges.
The play explores themes of bravery, friendship, and the moral imperative to stand against injustice. It highlights the role of ordinary citizens in resisting tyranny and protecting the vulnerable. Through Annemarie’s perspective, audiences witness the transformation from innocence to awareness as she grapples with the harsh realities of war and the Holocaust. The adaptation remains faithful to the novel’s spirit, capturing its emotional depth and historical significance.
Adults: $8.00; Students: $5.00.
