About this Event

Join the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino for an educator workshop on using primary resources, museum objects, and children’s books in the classroom.

This free workshop will include:

  • An introduction to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino
  • An overview of five children’s books published by the National Museum of the American Latino and how they correspond to state standards and curriculum in Social Studies, English and Language Arts.
  • Opportunities to participate in sample activities that can be replicated in the classroom as plug-and-play stand-alone activities.
  • An orientation to using the Smithsonian Learning Lab
  • A question-and-answer session.
  • A resource kit with copies of all the books outlined as well as reproducible handouts for the classroom.

The books featured are:

  • “Nuestra América: 30 Inspiring Latinas and Latinos who have Shaped the United States”
  • “Nuestras Voces: Paloma's Song for Puerto Rico”
  • “Nuestras Voces: On the Homefront with Valentina”
  • “Nuestras Voces: Cocuyo Lights the Way”
  • “Nuestras Voces: Wishing on a Star With Estrella”

Each book is geared toward upper elementary and middle school readers and comes with corresponding primary resources through the Smithsonian Learning Lab.

This workshop is open to teachers of all grade levels and subject areas; however, it may be more beneficial to upper elementary and middle school teachers, librarians, and other educators with a focus in Social Studies, English and Language Arts, ESL/ESOL, Spanish Language, Arts Education, and Science.

Food and refreshments will be provided.
