When Amsterdam branding agency thonik approached letterspace with an offer to host talks in their loft space, Céline Jouandet & Edgar Walthert saw the opportunity to contribute their own expertise to the design community. Team letterspace will address commonly encountered questions regarding font licensing, language support, substitution or custom fonts. This presentation is designed for professionals who work with type, license typefaces on behalf of clients, or commission bespoke typefaces from designers. If successful, this may become an ongoing series of educational talks for the design community, alongside our usual programming.

Céline Jouandet joined the team at Letterspace after graduating from the MA TypeMedia at KABK in The Hague. Originally from Paris, she is a graphic and type designer based in Amsterdam since 2021. She holds a Master’s degree in Typography from ECV Paris and began her career as a freelance designer with a strong focus on type design. Her practice bridges editorial design and type, informed by analogue processes and their digital translation. Céline develops custom fonts, lettering, logotypes, and type production projects, and has collaborated with clients and studios such as Saint Laurent (Kering), Nike, Production Type, and Vocal Type.

Edgar Walthert is a co-founder of Letterspace and likes to share his expertise in type design and font engineering. He developed a strong interest in letterforms during his studies in Lucerne, before working as a graphic and packaging designer in Hamburg. He later specialised in type design at TypeMedia in The Hague and at LucasFonts in Berlin. Through his work for Bold Monday on the IBM Plex project, Edgar deepened his skills in font engineering and TrueType hinting. He engineers fonts for foundries such as PYTE and Nouvelle Noire, and explores a more experimental and playful approach through variable fonts at Font Spectrum.

In this talk, Céline and Edgar will address questions and requests they frequently encounter in their professional practice. They will clarify common uncertainties around type design and font use, shed light on the increasingly complex landscape of font licensing, and highlight practical pitfalls that designers, studios, and clients may not yet be aware of. Through selected examples, they will share practical advice on where and how to look for typefaces, what to keep in mind when choosing a font, and how to brief a type designer for a bespoke typeface or for the refinement or redesign of a logo. The presentation will be followed by an open Q&A session, offering the opportunity to discuss broader questions about typography and type design in an accessible and informal setting.
