About this Event
The North Pacific Three (NP-3): Canada-Japan-ROK Trilateral Cooperation in the Arctic-Pacific
Date: April 2nd, 2025
Time: 12:00 – 1:30 PM
Location: Hopkins Bloomberg Center B222
As Europe and Asia become increasingly interconnected, the Arctic is rapidly emerging as a pivotal new geopolitical theater—placing Canada at the crossroads of these two regions. In its newly released Arctic Foreign Policy, Canada explicitly identifies Japan and the Republic of Korea as key non-Arctic partners, highlighting the importance of trilateral collaboration in addressing the shared challenges and opportunities unfolding in the Arctic-Pacific domain.
Jointly organized by the SAIS Canada, Japan, and Korea Clubs, this panel discussion is part of the SAIS Canada Club’s Arctic Series, which examines Canada’s newly released Arctic Foreign Policy and its strategic partnerships. Topics will include:
- Deepening linkages between the Arctic and Indo-Pacific
- Canada’s Arctic strategy
- Japan and Korea’s growing Arctic interests
- Opportunities for trilateral cooperation
We are honored to welcome an esteemed panel of experts:
- Dr. Joshua White – Professor of Practice of International Affairs, SAIS
- Dr. Elizabeth Wishnick – Senior Research Scientist, Center for Naval Analyses
- Dr. Whitney Lackenbauer – Canada Research Chair in the Study of the Canadian North, Trent University
- Dr. James Boutilier – Former Special Advisor, Canada’s Maritime Forces Pacific Headquarters
- Dr. Kent Calder – Edwin O. Reischauer Professor, SAIS
This event is made possible through the generous support of the Center for Canadian Studies, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, and the SAIS Asia Focus Area.
Lunch will be provided.
