BEYOND THE TUNE
INSTRUMENTAL FOLK ARRANGEMENT WORKSHOP

A day of musical creativity in the New Forest
Led by Paul Hutchinson – musician, composer and experienced workshop leader.
ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
This day is for all instruments – any instrument that can play a folk tune is welcome: wind, reeded, bowed, fretted or plucked!
Paul Hutchinson will guide us through simple, creative ways to enhance melodies and create rich folk textures by exploring rhythm, colour and harmony.
We’ll play together in small groups and as a full ensemble, developing and arranging a handful of tunes into lively, layered folk pieces.

OUTLINE FOR THE DAY
10:00 – Arrivals, tea & settling in
10:30–11:45 – Workshop 1
12:15–1:30 – Workshop 2
1:30–2:15 – Lunch break
2:15–3:30 – Workshop 3
4:00–5:00 – Workshop 4: Bringing it all together
(Times may be adjusted slightly on the day.)
PRACTICALITIES
Tea, coffee and biscuits provided.
Please bring your own lunch – there’s a community shop next door and a small supermarket 5 minutes away.

Music: Appropriate parts for all instruments will be sent out in advance.
WHO'S IT FOR
This workshop is not for complete beginners, but for instrumentalists with some playing experience and the ability to read music, who would like to explore playing and arranging folk tunes with others.
ABOUT PAUL HUTCHINGSON
Paul Hutchinson (Belshazzar’s Feast / Pagoda Project / Hoover the Dog) is a BBC Folk Award nominee, celebrated accordionist, and inspiring teacher — equally at home in concert halls, dance tents, and workshops.
