💃 November Cuban Salsa Classes 🕺

▫️Tuesdays: (November 4th-26th)
🔹6:30 - 7:30pm | Casino con Estilo A-Tiempo y Contra-Tiempo to Level Up Your Social Dancing: Patterns, Musicality, Styling/Body Movement, Rumba & Popular Dance Fusion for Leaders & Followers (Levels 3 & Up - Four Classes Total) NEW
This class is for intermediate & advanced dancers already familiar with the 6 fundamental steps elaborated on in Levels 1-2 & allows for participants to have a fluid conversation on the social dance floor. The 60-minute session will be a guided social dance simulation with ample attention given to etiquette, confidence building exercises, & a thorough dissection of the anatomy of a partner dance that precisely matches up with the music. Students will be able to respond to what is happening within the context & framework of a Timba song & to apply different Cuban rhythms to embody more expressive dancing with Cuban flavor while developing their own individual style. Understand, recognize, incorporate, & play with key social dance concepts, musicality, & body movement possibilities that exist within Cuban popular dances: Casino, Son, Mambo, Cha-Cha-Chá, Mozambiqué, & Pilón as well as Yuca, Rumba, & Afro-Cuban Orisha dances. Please note that this class is specifically designed for both leaders & followers looking to level up their social dancing & is taught by two instructors. Fuákata staff will coach couples with specific tips & pointers to ensure a sustained fluid & clear connection. Class will be taught a-tiempo (on 1) and contra-tiempo (on 2).
Instructors: Nikki & Chris
🔹 7:30-8:30pm | Intermediate-transition-to-Advanced Cuban Salsa & Rueda de Casino (Level 3, Part 1 - Eight Classes Total)

Precision, technique, & body mechanics are thoroughly dissected & articulated, allowing students to comfortably execute more complex concepts. Students will also fuse other Cuban traditional & popular dances into the proposed framework, all while dancing to rhythmically dense Timba as a means to combine intricate patterns with dynamic, rhythmic variation. The second part of class includes 30-min dedicated solely to Rueda de Casino group dancing & picks up precisely where Level 2.5 concluded with more intricate turn patterns, interconnected group moves, & unique partner exchanges. The curriculum includes patterns commonly danced in both Havana & Santiago de Cuba.

Instructors: Fuákata Staff

▫️Sundays: (November 9th - 30th)
🔹 3:00 - 4:00pm | Absolute Beginner Cuban Son (Level 1 - Four Classes Total)
Considered Cuba's first global choreographic export, Son originated in the eastern (Oriente) provinces of Cuba in the late 19th century & became Cuba's national rhythm & dance in the 1930's. Bringing together West African, Hispanic & local creole musical characteristics, its derivatives & fusions, particularly Salsa, have spread across the world. As Casino's slower & subtler precursor, Son imparts on the devoted dance student the essence of form, connection, & sensuous Afro-Cuban flavor, all while establishing a strong framework for musicality or understanding of Cuban music fundamentals needed to dance & interact with your partner. This class will expose students to the fundamentals of traditional Son Cubano, with considerable attention to its structural application to Casino: further strengthening lead & follow roles while making partner dancing more interactive, musical, engaging, sensual, & flavorful. Students will learn about Cuban music & dance in a historical context, as well as become familiar with the defining characteristics of Son, including contra-tiempo (on 2) timing, clave & other key Cuban musical concepts - will be able to distinguish Son from other Cuban musical genres & will be able to execute its defining footwork & traveling patterns, paseos, caídas, tornillos, etc.
Instructor: Chris
🔸 3:00 - 4:00pm | Intermediate Son Moderno (Levels 2 & 3 - Four Classes Total)
Son Moderno is an evolution of traditional Son Cubano & provides new dynamics that correspond also to the evolution of the music itself. While Son is widely regarded as Cuban historical patrimony, the music & dance have continued to evolve at the local level both prior to & after the revolution, frequently combining with Timba/Casino & other styles. This class will expose students to contemporary tendencies in Son, with special emphasis on the intersection of Son with Casino, applying Son timing & choreography in Timba, & an orientation to modern Son ensembles. A solid understanding of contra-tiempo timing is a key pre-requisite to this class, as well as familiarity of concepts detailed in our Level 1 Beginner Son Cubano series.
Instructor: Ryan
