We're delighted to be heading over to Northern France again..!
Where will we be volunteering?
We’ll be based in Calais with opportunities to help at Refugee Community Kitchen (RCK), The Calais Woodyard and other great organisations who work to support displaced people in northern France.
How do we get there?
We'll get the ferry from Dover around 9.45am, arriving in France approximately 12.30 local time. We'll get a half days volunteering in on day one before heading to our hotel and head into the town centre for dinner. Car-sharing is a great way to reduce the cost of getting to France. If you have a car and are able to take passengers, let us know and we’ll connect you.
Where will we stay?
We normally stay at a budget hotel within easy walking distance of the centre but other options are available. A buffet-style breakfast is available. It's about a 15 minute drive from the hotel back to the warehouse where the organisations we'll be working with are based.
Do I need special skills or experience?
At RCK, You don’t need any cooking skills, the main tasks are chopping veg, helping prepare salads, filling ‘bento’ boxes with meals ready to load into the van for distribution and the ever-present washing up..! There is also the possibility of going out on distribution to serve the meals directly to refugees in the camps.
At the Calais Woodyard, we swap chopping veg for chopping wood. The woodyard team process fire wood into small logs and kindling then bag it up for distribution. For refugees, this can be their only source of heat and is also used for cooking and heating water for hot drinks and washing.
Are there other options for volunteering?
These are just two of the organisations we worked with, there are several others who work from the same building such as La Capuche, who distribute tents, sleeping bags and clothing and the Calais Food Collective who make up and distribute cold food packs for refugees to cook for themselves.
We’re looking forward to welcoming back previous volunteers as well as meeting new friends who want to experience what helping out in France is all about. If you’d like to join us, leave a message here or contact us directly.
See you soon..!
