Our Bristol In Focus programme concludes with Richard Curtis’ much-loved romantic comedy Notting Hill — a BAFTA-nominated classic that has become one of the defining British romcoms of its era.
Starring Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, the film tells the story of an ordinary London bookseller whose life is turned upside down when he meets a world-famous American actress. Witty, warm and endlessly quotable, it balances heartfelt romance with a perfectly judged ensemble cast, including a scene-stealing Rhys Ifans.
The film also carries a strong Bristol connection through its director, the late Roger Michell, who was educated at Clifton College. It was there that he first began writing and directing short plays, laying the foundations for a distinguished, award-winning career in British film and theatre.
