Not Just Peer Pressure: Understanding Teen Mental Health and Substance Use

Let's face it. Parenting teens is hard. And when teens exhibit symptoms of high-risk behaviors, mental health issues and substance use it can feel like navigating a minefield. When communication breaks down, harsh words are exchanged, and you feel like you are on the verge of risking your relationship, you think there has to be a better way (and there is).

Small changes CAN produce big results for you and your loved one(s) struggling with these tough situations.

In this interactive workshop informed by the CRAFT* approach, we'll help you understand what these changes look like and work with you to develop and improve your communication and collaboration skills with your loved one. You'll learn how to activate recovery in your family and communities and start changing the dynamics in your relationships.

• How to better understand what causes mental health and substance use
• Reflect on changes that would benefit the family as a whole
• Recognize resources to set teens up for success
• Reduce stigma around teen challenges

This workshop takes place from 6:30 - 8:00 PM Central Time. Refreshments and a light dinner will be served. The information presented in this workshop is informed by theraputic, evidence-based best practices and treatments

About the workshop presenter:

Shelby Banken, Nystrom & Associatates, Adolescent Clinical Supervisor, Addiction Services, LADC

Clinical Interests:

Shelby has a passion for working with adolescents and young adults working toward overcoming challenges associated with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.

Clinical Approach:

Shelby has a strong educational background and formal training in adolescent development and treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Twelve Step Facilitation, and Motivational Interviewing. She takes a person-centered approach to therapy and utilize multiple psychological theories to bolster the patient experience including Humanistic, Cognitive Behavioral, and Biopsychosocial.

Thrive is a 501c3 non-profit, based in Eagan, Minnesota providing grant funded, free professionals services to the Dakota County communities through a partnership with the Dakota County Public Health Opioid Funds. Thrive offers person-centered, individual services to families impacted by a loved-ones mental health or substance use concerns. Thrive works with any family, whether they have a teen vaping, or an adult using problematic illicit substances. Thrive offers one-on-one coaching, educational workshops, evidence-based support groups and assistance in navigating resources and systems of care.
