About this Event
Celebrated author and journalist Susan Orlean will discuss her memoir "Joyride" with Joe Donahue of WAMC/Northeast Public Radio. This event is sponsored by the Skidmore College English Department.
In Joyride, Orlean charts her course through the dazzling journalism landscape of the nineties, offering inspiration, humor, and a deeply personal look at what it means to lead a creative life from "one of our national treasures" (The Washington Post). This memoir explores the creative process behind some of Orlean's most beloved works, from The New Yorker to Hollywood, offering both an extraordinary account of a life well-lived and an exhaustive guide to the "writing life" of one of our finest narrative nonfiction authors.
Advance praise for Joyride:
"For anyone who’s asked—and haven’t we all—‘How does she write like that?,’ this wise and exuberant book is the answer." — David Sedaris
"A celebration of a supremely accomplished writing life... full of some of the most useful advice on craft that any budding (or long-practicing, for that matter) writer could ask for." — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
Susan Orlean has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1992. She is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including The Library Book, Rin Tin Tin, Saturday Night, and The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Academy Award–winning film Adaptation. She lives with her family and her animals in Los Angeles.
