About this Event
Whether you're new to harm reduction, looking to strengthen your overdose response skills, or hoping to have more productive conversations about substance use in your community, this event will provide practical, evidence-based tools you can use right away.
Grounded in the principles of tertiary prevention, this 5-hour experience will explore how harm reduction strategies help prevent overdose, reduce the impacts of ongoing substance use, and improve health and quality of life for individuals and communities.
The day includes two core components: Tertiary Prevention and Harm Reduction Foundations and Compassionate Overdose Response. Participants will learn how to recognize and respond to opioid overdoses, administer naloxone with confidence, engage respectfully with people who use drugs using trauma-informed, person-centered approaches, understand the evidence supporting harm reduction and tertiary prevention, address stigma and misconceptions, and navigate challenging conversations with empathy while promoting community understanding.
Designed to be highly interactive with honest conversations about the realities of stigma, particularly in rural communities, with a focus on practical strategies for building trust, educating others, and strengthening community response. Participants will be encouraged to share experiences, ask questions, and engage in thoughtful discussion throughout the day.
This event is designed for healthcare professionals, behavioral health professionals, first responders, educators, social service providers, community members, and anyone interested in learning more about harm reduction, including individuals with questions or skepticism who want to better. understand the evidence behind these approaches.
Participants will leave with practical skills, increased confidence, and actionable strategies they can immediately apply in their workplaces and communities.
Scholarships and travel assistance are available to support participation from individuals and organizations serving rural and underserved communities, including Coos, Carroll, and Grafton Counties. Lunch will be provided.
