Normalizing Death and Mourning for Self and Clients
About this Event
Why don’t we talk about death—and what do we lose by avoiding it? Laurie Dietrich (Programs Manager at Wake) will guide us through this powerful session on becoming more comfortable and knowledge about death, dying, and the process of mourning. This CEU promises to not just be emotionally salient, but also intensely practical. The funerary industry in Louisiana is a particular beast, and there are specific laws and procedures that grieving individuals are almost never aware of until it's way too late. As a mental health professional, you are uniquely positioned to inform clients about the legal processes they can expect to navigate around death, as well as help normalize for clients how, essentially, EVERYTHING is normal when it comes to mournings.
Through her work with Wake, Laurie has hosted death cafes and other events to help bring this knowledge to the wider public and get folks talking about the numinous qualities and the nuts and bolts of it all as well. Part of this CEU will also involve descriptions of what actually happens when a body dies!! Up until recently this kind of intimacy with death was normative--come learn what has been robbed from you by the unholy union of capitalism and cadavers. For those who want to get especially intimate with death, there will be an optional "death rehearsal" meditation from 515 to 6 pm...
