This 3 day HYBRID thematic conference is open to anyone with an interest in the chemical emergence of life. We call for abstracts from scientists and researchers to be submitted before 11th August 2024 and welcome submissions from early career scientists and postgraduates. The main theme of this conference is Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) as indicated below, but we also appreciate abstracts on linked/related topics...

Carbon Chemistry may not the “Be-All” and “End-All” for the Emergence of Life on Earth
How did life begin on the Earth? Although there are more that twenty hypotheses in literature which claim the way forward for the emergence of life in this vein reactive oxygen species (ROS) may also have played a pivotal role. Reactive species of oxygen can react with numerous other elements to form innumerable varieties of ions free radicals and molecules; in essence ROS can either donate unpaired electrons or alternatively by accept electrons from other species. The fact that these newly formed exotic species are generated by ROS warrants further investigation into the possible role it played in the emergence of life on Earth.
Whilst it is true that the chemistry of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) has been known about since the 1950’s it is in recent years that research on ROS across several disciplines has advanced rapidly producing significant new results on their generation interactions and decay on rocky and icy planetary and other astronomical bodies as well as in pre-biotic chemistry and the emergence of life. Still ROS chemistry does not overly feature in the mainstream of astrobiology so in order to try and redress this NoRCEL presents the first ever event featuring ROS and related topics and the resultant implications for the emergence of life on Earth and elsewhere in the Galaxy.
