Come and learn about the Njál's Saga Tapestry Exhibition of Iceland. This embroidery (tapestry) workshop will be presented by Claudia Petursson, North American Representative for the Njál's Saga Tapestry Exhibition of Iceland. She will explain the traveling Icelandic tapestry exhibit and participants will be able to participate in the embroidery class--learning the tapestry stitches. All the practice materials are free. Please reserve your spot by emailing the Sons of Norway (Borgund Lodge) at [email protected]. In the town of Hvolsvöllur, South Iceland, the community hand-embroidered a 90 meter-long tapestry depicting Iceland's mightiest saga, Njál's Saga. This may be the longest, hand-stitched tapestry in the world. They completed the entire tapestry in 7 years, with 12,518 discrete sewing entries. The artists used natural Icelandic sheep's wool and hand-dyed the wool with local plants. Visitors from every continent came to sew. The tapestry is sewn in the Bayeux style, like the 1000-year-old tapestry in Bayeux, France. You will have the opportunity to learn these tapestry stitches.
