NJHHS monthly program for October is dedicated to the historic charcoal industry that once thrived throughout northern New Jersey. Did you know more people were employed to provide charcoal than worked in the mines, forges, or furnaces of the area? Charcoal was an absolute necessity in order to fuel the local iron industry. Blast furnaces and forges could not operate without the use of charcoal, and iron mining companies often had difficulty recruiting master “colliers” that were needed.Join local historian Hans Neiderstrasser and explore the largely forgotten charcoal industry of northern New Jersey.
Program takes place on Sunday, October 19th at 1:30pm in the Coffee Shop at Ringwood Manor. FREE and open to the public!
