The Island of Lost Souls (dir. Erle C. Kenton, USA, 71 min.)
Island of Lost Souls (1932) is a science fiction horror film from Paramount, directed by Erle C. Kenton and adapted from H. G. Wells’ novel The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896). Starring Charles Laughton, Richard Arlen, and Kathleen Burke, the story follows Edward Parker (Arlen), a sailor stranded on an island ruled by the scientist Dr. Moreau (Laughton). There, Parker meets Lota (Burke), unaware she is part-panther and one of Moreau’s many creations—animals transformed into humans through his disturbing experiments. The film was released as Paramount’s follow-up to their hit Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931).
