Join DOSE., EMERENCZ, and JAKOB Saturday April 19th at the Oxygen Art Centre for NIGHT CITY. This dance event takes its name from the neon-soaked urban sprawl featured in William Gibson’s seminal novel Neuromancer. Night City is a chaotic, hyper-commercialized metropolis where shadowy corporations dominate, technology permeates every aspect of life, and the streets pulse with danger and opportunity. This event aims to capture the essence of that world—a fusion of cutting-edge technology, rebellion, and underground culture. The soundtrack will feature vintage and contemporary releases from the genres of acid, darkwave, ebm, electro, industrial, and techno, all with a distinctly dark retro futuristic sound.NIGHT CITY pays homage to the cultural and social influence of cyberpunk, a subgenre of science fiction literature. Cyberpunk reflects many of our anxieties about late-stage capitalism, depicting dystopian worlds where powerful corporations and wealthy elites exploit technology to control society and accumulate profits. However, it also showcases hope where underground resistance utilizes that same technology to fight back. This duality of technology as both oppressor and liberator is cyberpunk's core message. Similarly, electronic music genres like darkwave, ebm, industrial, and techno emerged as forms of cultural resistance. These underground styles reject commercialism, celebrating non-conformity, and rebellion. Both cyberpunk and these musical movements create spaces for freedom and liberation in a profit-driven world.

Dose. is a multifaceted DJ duo consisting of partners Max & Taylor. Their musical style flows through genre bending Techno that fuses sounds from the punk & disco eras. In their hometown, Dose. curates underground events, performs weekly on Kootenay Coop Radio, & manages the bookings for their company Dose.Productions. Having found solace in the international House & Techno scene, Dose. pushes for the same inclusivity & equality within their own musical sphere; they consistently strive to represent fem folk, womxn, queer, & everyone in-between. It is their strong mandate to always have gender balance & equal representation within their music & event curation.

EMERENCZ:
Emerencz Merkle is a Queer DJ, Producer, and the Founder of OBSKUR MUSIC Record Label presently residing on the Nelson in British Columbia.
They have a background as a classically trained musician who delved into Northwestern Canadian electronic music culture in 2009. Their journey was profoundly inspired by traveling to cities where the diversity and richness of electronic music far exceeded the confines of small-town Canada, exposing them to vibrant underground sounds. This influence drives their mission to transform off-the-grid spaces into platforms for sharing warehouse-inspired techno, house, acid, and various electronic styles.
Drawing deeply from the roots of electronic music, their sound is a tribute to the pioneering 90s house and techno scenes of Chicago, New York, and Detroit. Melding stripped-down elements with the squelching acid lines and euphoric anthem-style vocals, they create a sonic journey that balances groove and grit. Synth stabs punctuate their tracks, weaving nostalgic textures with a modern touch. Their music resonates with the raw energy and innovation of electronic music’s earliest days, reimagined for today’s dance floors.
As the driving force behind OBSKUR MUSIC and OBSKUR BOOKINGS, Emerencz channels their community-building zeal into providing a global platform for Queer / POC / women talent. Their penchant for self-expression extends beyond music, echoing in the art and fashion woven into their label’s designs.

JAKOB:
JΔKΟB has a passion for blending evocative sounds and avante-garde releases; all with a distinctly dark, moody, yet alluring atmosphere. Taking inspiration from the radical and rebellious origins of punk and electronic music and the dark music genres their union spawned, he gravitates towards tracks with disco heavy rhythms, reverb drenched snares, sequence driven synths, and brooding, introspective lyrics. With a preference for all things analog, he often chooses selections from his diverse collection of vinyl that spans the sub-genres of the gothic music canon. JΔKΟB’s eclectic sets can simultaneously evoke a nostalgic yearning for the past, while igniting a burning desire for the future.
