📚 Nội dung chương trình:
Nghệ thuật đương đại Đông Nam Á là gì, và đâu là những đặc điểm chung của một khu vực đa dạng như chúng ta?
🔹 Phần đầu chương trình, iola Lenzi sẽ trình bày cuốn sách mới, khảo sát cách thức, lý do và thời điểm mà các nghệ sĩ tại Indonesia, Philippines, Thái Lan, Việt Nam, Malaysia, Singapore, và sau này là Campuchia và Myanmar, đã phát triển những ngôn ngữ nghệ thuật đương đại mới có những nét tương đồng giữa các văn hoá mà ban đầu chưa có sự trao đổi với nhau.
Cuốn sách làm rõ các phương thức thẩm mỹ, tư tưởng và lưu thông có liên kết nội vùng, đồng thời cho thấy mối quan hệ của chúng với bối cảnh xã hội – chính trị – văn hóa tại từng địa phương. Từ đó, sách đưa ra luận cứ về bản sắc riêng biệt của nghệ thuật đương đại Đông Nam Á trong bức tranh nghệ thuật đương đại toàn cầu.
Bài trình bày sẽ tóm lược các luận điểm trung tâm và, qua ví dụ cụ thể, làm nổi bật sự tiếp nối trong thế kỷ 21 của những đặc tính cốt lõi đã hiện diện khi lĩnh vực này xuất hiện từ nửa thế kỷ trước.
🔹 Tiếp đó, nghệ sĩ-giám tuyển Trần Lương sẽ đưa ra một góc nhìn so sánh từ Việt Nam, dựa trên thực hành nghệ thuật và giám tuyển của ông được tập hợp trong Trần Lương Soaked in the Long Rain (Milan: Mousse Publishing, 2024) — tuyển tập xuất bản nhân triển lãm hồi cố tại nhiều quốc gia trên thế giờ cùng tên do Biljana Ciric giám tuyển.

👥 VỀ DIỄN GIẢ:
✨ iola Lenzi là một sử gia và giám tuyển người Singapore về nghệ thuật đương đại Đông Nam Á. Bà có bằng Cử nhân Luật (LBB) và bằng tiến sĩ về lịch sử nghệ thuật Hiện đại châu Á, hiện đang giảng dạy Lịch sử Nghệ thuật Đương Đại Đông Nam Á và phương pháp giám tuyển ở Đại học Công nghệ Nanyang (NTU) và trong chương trình Thạc sĩ Lịch sử Nghệ thuật Châu Á tại Đại học Nghệ thuật Singapore (UAS). iola Lenzi đã xuất bản nhiều nghiên cứu về nghệ thuật đương đại Việt Nam, tập trung vào giai đoạn đầu của các thực hành đương đại tại Hà Nội những năm 1990-2000.
Bà từng làm giám tuyển độc lập hoặc giám tuyển chính cho khoảng 40 triển lãm tại châu Á và châu Âu, biên tập sáu tuyển tập nghiên cứu đa ngôn ngữ, và là tác giả của cuốn "Museums of Southeast Asia" (2004) (TD: Các bảo tàng tại Đông Nam Á). Chuyên luận mới nhất của bà là "Power, Politics and the Street: Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia after 1970" (Lund Humphries, 2024).
✨ Trần Lương, một nghệ sĩ thị giác, curator độc lập, và một người tiên phong trong quá trình kiến tạo không gian cho nghệ thuật đương đại mang tính phản biện ở Việt Nam. Là một người cố vấn luôn sẵn sàng giúp đỡ lớp trẻ, Trần Lương vượt lên khỏi những ý niệm định khuôn về thực hành giám tuyển; khuyến khích nghệ sĩ nới rộng đường biên sáng tác; tạo ra những cơ hội trao đổi giữa ba miền Bắc, Trung, Nam.
Trần Lương hiện là đồng sáng lập Trung tâm APD và thành viên Hội đồng Cố vấn Nghệ thuật – Hội đồng Văn hóa Châu Á New York từ năm 2019. Ông cũng đã tham gia nhiều hội đồng nghệ thuật quốc tế uy tín như Mạng lưới Nghệ thuật Châu Á (ANA) (2003 – 2009), Ban giám khảo Quốc tế của Liên hoan phim Quốc tế Oberhausen lần thứ 59 tại Đức (2013). Các giải thưởng nghệ thuật danh giá thế giới: Giải thưởng Prince Claus của Hà Lan (2014), Giải thưởng Quỹ Andy Warhol về Nghệ thuật Thị giác (1999).

"What is contemporary Southeast Asian art, and what field traits are shared across our diverse region?"
🔹 The first part of the event will kick off with iola Lenzi unpacking her recent book to examine how, why, and when artists in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and later Cambodia, and Myanmar developed comparable innovating contemporary art languages —initially unknown to one another.
The book exposes intraregionally connected aesthetic, conceptual, and circulatory modes, showing their relationship with local social-political-cultural contexts. The book thus makes a case for Southeast Asian contemporary art's distinctive identity within global contemporary art.
This presentation will summarise the book's central arguments and through examples, spotlight the 21st century continuation of essential characteristics of Southeast Asian contemporary art seen in the field as it emerged half a century ago.
🔹 Following Lenzi’s presentation, Trần Lương will offer a comparative perspective from Vietnam, drawing on his artistic and curatorial practice as collected in Trần Lương: Soaked in the Long Rain (Milan: Mousse Publishing, 2024)—an anthology published to accompany his travelling retrospective of the same title, curated by Biljana Ciric.

👥 About our speakers:
✨ iola Lenzi is a Singapore historian and curator of Southeast Asian contemporary art. Holding an LLB and a PhD in Modern Asian art history, her research and writings frame Southeast Asian contemporary art in Asian cultural and historical contexts, arguing for the field’s distinctive aesthetic and conceptual voice within global art.
She has conceptualised and lead-curated some 40 exhibitions in Asia and Europe, including institutional projects at Singapore Art Museum; ARTER, Istanbul; Bangkok Art and Culture Centre; Grand Palais, Paris; The Substation, Singapore; and Goethe Institut, Southeast Asia. Lenzi teaches Southeast Asian Contemporary Art History, and Contemporary Curating at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, as well as in the Asian Art Histories MA Programme, University of the Arts, Singapore. She is the author of Museums of Southeast Asia (Didier Millet, 2004), and has edited five multilingual anthologies on regional contemporary art. Her most recent book is Power, Politics and the Street: Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia after 1970 (Lund Humphries, 2024).
✨ Trần Lương is an independent curator, visual artist, and major figure in creating space for critical contemporary art in Vietnam. A generous mentor of youth, Tran Luong goes beyond normal curatorship, encouraging performers to push the boundaries, creating exchanges between North, Centre and South Vietnam.
Trần Lương is currently the co-founder of APD Center and member of the Artistic Advisory Council – Asian Cultural Council New York NY. from 2019. He has also participated in many prestigious international art councils such as the Art Network Asia (ANA) (2003 – 2009), International Jury of 59th International Oberhausen film festival in Germany (2013). World prestigious art awards: Prince Claus Prize of the Netherlands (2014), The Andy Warhol Foundation Award for the Visual Arts (1999).
