While continuo players typically enjoy a lot of freedom in their playing this concert features works from the Bach circle with obbligato (obligatory) keyboard or viola da gamba lines. One might even think of these written parts as constraints that replace the traditionally improvised continuo part in the bass. Many of these works with obbligato parts were adaptations or arrangements from other works. This concert will feature some 18th-century arrangements as well as several of our own inspired by 18th-century models. The program will include a performance of Bach’s cantata Ich habe genug with mezzo-soprano oboe fortepiano and gamba in the kind of prescriptive version C.P.E. Bach would have created for a performance at home instead of in church.
