About this Event
It’s not the size of your voice, it’s what you do with it.
Resistance Songs Workshop & Fundraiser
for and the
Hosted by New York Choir Project
It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of runaway social injustice, but we’ve got more power than we think. Our voices, together in song, show unity, strength and resilience. They drown out the language of hate and intolerance. And they elevate joy over despair.
Just look at Minneapolis , where people are using song to protest DHS’ policy and thugs. Inspired by their courage, our two (identical) workshops will teach simple harmonies from the @singingresistance song book, while raising funds for two important local organizations fighting immigration injustice.
Monday, February 16
Gibney Dance Studio H,
Workshop 1: 5:30pm-7pm
Workshop 2: 7:30pm-9pm
About the workshops
Is the workshop only New York Choir Project members and experienced singers? Do I need to read music?
No. Everyone is welcome and you don’t need any singing experience. The songs we‘re teaching are very simple, will have lyrics provided and will be taught by ear (not sheet music).
Is there a difference between the two workshops?
There isn’t - it’s the same workshop being run twice so that as many as people as possible have the chance to participate. The same songs will be taught at both.
Do I have to be an experienced protester? Am I signing up to join a protest? Will you be organizing singing protest events?
You do not have to be an experienced protester and this workshop is not a protest event. We don’t plan to organize our own protests - there are many other groups in NYC who are much more qualified and experienced than us at doing that.
Our hope is that you can use the songs we teach in your resistance actions in the future, either through other organized events or by organizing your own actions. We will be providing handouts at the workshop with resources for how you can get involved in existing resistance and immigrant support groups and there will be a chance to optionally sign-up to connect with other attendees after the workshop, for if you want to arrange to take the songs out into the streets together e.g. at the next No Kings event on March 28th.
What if I’m a current choir member but don't want to participate in this workshop?
All good, you do you! Participating (or not) in this event in no way impacts any regular New York Choir Project activities.
Are the workshops accessible to people with disabilities or concerned about COVID?
Gibney Dance Studios at 53A Chamber St has automated entrance doors, elevators and step-free access for those who need it. There are ADA-compliant and gender neutral bathrooms available. And you are welcome to wear a mask throughout the session. (Just note that if you’re not used to singing in a mask, go easy and make sure you’re breathing steadily.) If you need to request an accommodation, please email us at [email protected]
Can children attend the workshop?
The workshop is designed for adults, rather than children’s learning needs, and we can’t guarantee all language will be 100% “family friendly.” That said, if you have an interested teen or older child, you are welcome to bring them to participate under your supervision.
Will there be food and drink available?
There is no food or drink available for purchase, but if you need to bring a snack, you may eat in the kitchenette outside the studio space. Either way, we recommend bringing water or filling up at the water fountains before singing.
Will you be organizing more workshops like this?
We’re not planning on it now, but not ruling it out either. We’ll announce any future sessions on Instagram. Whether you can or can’t join us this time, do check out the resources at the bottom of the FAQs.
About the fundraiser
What are the workshops fundraising for? Where will my donation go?
Funds raised will be split equally between two registered 501(c)3 non-profits: Mixteca and the New York Immigration Coalition. You can learn more on their websites and we encourage you to follow them on social media. The organizers are covering all costs of running the workshop (except the Eventbrite ticket processing fees), so 100% of your donation will go to the cause.
What is the ticket cost/suggested donation?
You have the option to choose your amount from $30, $50, $75, and $100. There is also a pay-what-you-can option if you want to donate less or more.
Can I still donate if I can’t make join a workshop?
Please do! There is a donation-only (no ticket) option on Eventbrite. Or to avoid the processing fee, you can Venmo your donation to @nychoirproject (last four digits of phone: 0052), adding “Resistance Workshop” in the note.
