Lecture: New Urbanism, Past, Present, and Future

Info: Martha Van Rensselaer, Room G151. The movement known as New Urbanism in the United States seeks to address and provide a type of development that promotes the health of individuals through the incorporation of safe, easily accessible, and walkable lifestyle, which is in contrast to a typical suburban environment where most activities are reliant on vehicular transport for everyday activities. The New Urbanism environments promote social connections to neighbors and visitors with zoning that emphasizes front door to sidewalk living over driveway and vehicle garages dominating building frontage. The New Urbanism also encourages connection to the broader community through mass-transit placing less pressure on land use, preserving more of the natural environment, compared to the typical suburban planning and zoning that is road and parking lot dominate to handle the high demand for vehicular traffic over longer distances and commercial activities.
