NRD New Skater Intake 2026Newcastle Roller Derby New Skater Intake
Join the best sport and community, EVER!
Join us for our exciting 16-week New Skater Intake program! Each week, you’ll participate in two-hour sessions led by our experienced coaches, where you’ll be on skates and learning the ropes of roller derby.
Throughout the New Skater Intake, you’ll gain a solid understanding of skating fundamentals, such as how to stop, change direction, and navigate confidently around others. You’ll also be introduced to essential roller derby moves and skills, including safe engagement in full-contact elements of the sport—all within a supportive environment.
In addition to on-skate practice, we’ll provide valuable off-skate learning to help you orient yourself with roller derby, including the game’s rules and the basics of officiating. This will empower you to explore various pathways in the sport, whether as a Skater, an Official, or a Non-skating Official. We welcome individuals from total beginners to those with prior skating experience, as long as you’re over the age of 18.
Mark your calendars!
The New Skater Intake runs from Sunday, January 11th for 16 weeks from 9:00am till 11:00 am. Please arrive 15 minutes early if you need to rent kit, as sessions will start promptly at 9:00am.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know how to skate?
Not at all! Our skilled coaches are here to guide you through the basics and ensure your safety.
Do I need my own skates and safety equipment?
If you have your own skates and protective gear, great! If not, please let us know when signing up, and we’ll do our best to provide you with the right sizes. While we can’t guarantee availability for everyone, we will certainly try!
You will need to bring your own mouthguard for week 4 — it’s essential for your safety and must be fitted to your teeth by the fourth week.
What should I wear?*
Dress in something comfortable that allows for movement. Most of our skaters opt for a t-shirt or vest top paired with leggings or shorts. Keep in mind that you’ll be wearing knee and elbow pads, so it’s best to avoid thick or bulky clothing and jeans.
What else should I bring?
Don’t forget your water and spare socks. If you’re sensitive to sound, we recommend bringing earplugs to enhance your comfort during your time here.
