New Park was developed as an industrial suburb to Harrogate, effectively an independent community, which grew along the main Skipton and Ripon Roads in the 1840s. It was the location of the town's gas and electricity works plus quarries and an industrial laundry. Workers' housing was built and the district had a pub, shops, chapels, a school and an institute - and railway.
