Juror and Judge
Daniel Ludwig, our juror, is an artist whose work has encompassed painting, drawing, and bronze sculpture. Though the classical figure is central to most of his imagery, the distillation of memory and the elusiveness of temporality move his work towards an alternate, dream-like reality.
He has been showing his work over the last 40 years in the U.S. and Europe. He showed with the Allen Stone Gallery in New York City, the Cadogan Contemporary Gallery in London, England, and the Heike Pickett Gallery in his home state of Kentucky. He is currently represented by the Galerie Friedmann-Hahn in Berlin, Germany and the CK Contemporary Gallery in San Francisco, CA. In 2018 there was a retrospective exhibition of his works from over 38 years at the Galleries at Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY.
With his wife, the painter Anne Leone, he shares time between their homes and studios in Brooklyn, NY and Berkley, MA.
Thomas Friel, our judge, is a multimedia artist and art educator based in New Orleans, LA. He received a BFA in Printmaking form the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, and an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. He has exhibited in non-profit galleries around the US, including ACRE Projects and Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery (DFBRL8R) in Chicago, IL; Antenna, Good Children, and The Front in New Orleans, LA and TIger Strikes Asteroid in Los Angeles, CA. He has written art criticism for badatsports.com, and print publications including EXPO Chicago. From 2018-2020, he was a member of the New Orleans artist collective The Front. In 2024 he was an artist in residence at the Joan Mitchell Center in New Orleans, LA. As Curator of Interpretation and Public Engagement at the Newcomb Art Museum of Tulane University, he works to strengthen art education and appreciation, believing that art can provide common ground among people and build empathy.
