NEW in Toronto: The Science and Controversy of Fluoride
About this Event
On October 20th, we present : "The Science and Controversy of Fluoride" by Prof. Christine Till
Expect a nuanced look at the science behind fluoride, the controversies surrounding it, and what it means to make good public health decisions when the evidence is still evolving.
Fluoride has long been considered a major public health success story. But as research into environmental exposures and brain development evolves, questions about its potential effects on the developing brain have become increasingly difficult to ignore.
In this lecture, Dr. Christine Till explores the science behind fluoride exposure and neurodevelopment, examining what researchers know, what remains uncertain, and why scientists continue to disagree about how the evidence should be interpreted.
You’ll learn about the everyday sources of fluoride exposure, findings from epidemiological research, and proposed biological mechanisms that may help explain potential effects - including the possible role of thyroid function. Dr. Till will also explore why studying environmental exposures is so challenging, particularly during periods of early development when the brain and body are changing rapidly.
The conversation ultimately comes back to a fundamental public health question: how do we weigh established benefits against emerging evidence of potential risks?
💡 About the versatile Prof. Christine Till
Dr. Christine Till is a Professor in the Faculty of Health at York University in Toronto, a clinical neuropsychologist, and the 2025 recipient of the Herbert Needleman Medal. She received her PhD in Psychology from the University of Toronto with specialization in neuroscience and toxicology.
Her research bridges developmental neurosciences and children’s environmental health. She is currently leading multi-disciplinary studies examining the effects of early-life exposure to fluoride and other neurotoxicants on maternal thyroid functioning and child neurodevelopment.
Dr. Till is an advocate for translating research into evidence-based strategies that can enhance health outcomes across the lifespan.
