Dear friends of New Europe Book Club,At the request of our members, for our December reading we selected a collection of fairy tales.
Christmas is a magical season when St. Nicholas (Святий Миколай) brings gifts to children in Ukraine and on Christmas Eve animals receive the gift of speech for one magic night. Many a Ukrainian child ran to the barn on Christmas Eve night to try to hear animals talk.
We chose a book of fairy tales--stories from different lands-- collected by Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko. The collection "When The Animals Could Talk" ("Коли ще звірі говорили") was first published in Lviv in 1899 when Lviv was part of Austro-Hungarian Empire.
We will read the English language translation of the collection published in 1987 in Soviet occupied Ukraine and available through Internet Archive. You can read it online or download on your device. You can choose to read all the stories or just one. We encourage you to enjoy the artwork of the 1987 edition that was not part of the original 1899 edition.
