NEW DATE! This is the new date for the Whau Kayak Clean Up event which was supposed to take place April 11th.

Come join Te Whau Pathway Project and Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and explore the Whau in partnership Auckland Sea Kayaks and Whau the People. This event is generaously funded by Foundation North and Auckland Council.

Please arrive at least 15mins prior and check in at the tent if you are kayaking. If you are running late please call 0226312410


🚣 On the Awa – Explore Te Whau by kayak with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks. Learn about waterway protection, observe local wildlife, and help keep the awa clean by removing rubbish. (Registration required)

🌿 On the Land – Drop in throughout the afternoon for nature-based workshops with Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust and Whau the People. Try your hand at raranga (weaving), engage in freshwater monitoring, and create art inspired by the natural world.


About Te Whau Pathway Project:

Te Whau Pathway is a shared path that will one day connect between the Waitematā and Manukau harbours.

The pathway will provide the opportunity for amazing recreational choices and safer and more sustainable alternatives for travel. Nurturing a sense of pride, ownership and kaitiakitanga of the Whau River, one of the jewels in West Auckland’s crown.

🌞 Weather call -

Sea conditions permitting - we will run with light rain. A final weather call will be made the afternoon prior to the event. Cancellation due to weather will be communicated via email or eventbrite.


🎟 Registrations -

  • Children younger than 10 will not be able to participate in the kayaking activity but all ages are welcome to participate in the nature art, weaving and freshwater workshops.
  • Children aged 10-13 need to have a confident adult in the back of their kayak. Children under 16 need an adult companion.
  • Prior kayak experience and swimming ability is required for the kayaking activity.
  • Please note that the maximum weight for the sea kayaks is 120kg per person.
  • Please only register for the kayaking if you can commit to the full 4hr timeslot, expect to spend 1.5hrs kayaking and 45mins for each of the workshops.
  • Early kayak access codes for people in the Whau Local Board area will be circulated to local pages or email [email protected] to access (please reference the suburb you live in). Otherwise all remaining tickets will go live on Monday 23rd March.
  • You are not required to pre register for the land based workshops, you can just sign up on the day.


What to bring -

  • Gloves
  • Clothing suitable for kayaking (please no jeans)
  • Footwear you do not mind getting wet and muddy
  • Water bottle
  • Rain coat
  • Hat, sun glasses and sunblock

  • Double sit on top kayaks
  • PFD
  • Paddle
  • Rubbish bags
  • Rubbish pickers
  • H&S equipment
  • Kayak instructors
  • Light snacks and hot drinks
  • Art and weaving supplies
  • Freshwater monitoring equipment

💰 Donations -

Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust runs a series of free and subsidised events over the summer months - we rely on your support to make them happen. We appreciate donations, either cash/eftpos on the day, online or by giving a koha of your time volunteering at a future event.


❌ Cancellation policy -

If you give less than 24 hrs notice when cancelling your registration or you no show without a valid excuse (i.e COVID, or other illness/emergency) then you may be sent an invoice of $20 per person. This is to ensure spaces do not go to waste and that people do not miss out on attending this free event.
