About this Event
The Live Poets Society of Baltimore presents occasional readings by local poets accompanied by local musicians. We are so excited for their event held in partnership with Writers for Democratic Action and hosted at Bird in Hand!
They'll share an afternoon titled “The Voice of Protest,” featuring poets Abdul Ali, Liz Hazen, Amy Bernstein, Virginia Crawford, Ailish Hopper, Kim Jensen, Sam Schmidt, Stewart Shaw, and Linda Rabben. Musicians include Drum Dr. Dot.
The event's title comes from “True Patriotism,” an anti-war speech by Charles Eliot Norton (1827–1908), an American author, social critic, and Harvard professor. A progressive social reformer and activist, he was from the same illustrious family as the 20th-century poet T.S. Eliot.
An opponent of the Spanish-American War, he wrote in 1898: “The voice of protest, of warning, of appeal is never more needed than when the clamor of fife and drum, echoed by the press and too often by the pulpit, is bidding all men fall in and keep step and obey in silence the tyrannous word of command. Then, more than ever, it is the duty of the good citizen not to be silent.”
Come listen and join in!
