“… one of the most memorable and melodic debut albums of recent years…” - Rolling Stone
Greenlandic singer-songwriter (and Port Townsend resident), Simon Lynge, will perform at The Palindrome in Port Townsend on Sunday, October 19th at 6pm with his band The Martial Hearts. The Martial Hearts include Nicolai Land (bass) and Anders Pedersen (drums), both from Copenhagen, multi-instrumentalist Richard Lobb from Bristol England, and vocalist Janna Marit of Port Townsend. Land, Pedersen and Lobb will all be in town to record a new record (expected 2026 release) with Simon at Rainshadow Recording.
Simon Overgaard Lynge was born in Holstebro Denmark and grew up in Qaqortoq Greenland. His musical roots run deep. Simon's father was a theatrical performer and an accordionist who played with the Greenlandic musician Rasmus Lyberth and his grandfather was a composer and conductor and namesake of a church choir in Qaqortoq, which still exists to this day. Simon began singing as a boy in a church choir in Denmark, and was inspired to begin writing songs in his teenage years by the music of Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby Stills & Nash, among others. As a teenager, Lynge worked as a delivery boy for a supermarket in Qaqortoq, before moving back to Denmark, where he enrolled in the Holstebro Music School to study opera, piano, drums and music theory. While in Denmark, he became part of the young Copenhagen music scene, performing his own compositions as a singer and guitarist in various venues. Around this time he also travelled to London, Nashville and Los Angeles to perform and write his own music.
London's Sunday Times called Lynge’s debut album, The Future, “… a breath of fresh island air...” and Rolling Stone said it was “… one of the most memorable and melodic debut albums of recent years…” His albums The Future and The Map of Your Life were both nominated as Best Album in The Independent Music Awards in New York. His songs have been featured in US network television shows and film and Simon has appeared on BBC Breakfast TV, performed at Glastonbury Festival and was personally invited by Emmylou Harris to tour with her through Europe and in the US.
Simon has become an integral part of the Port Townsend community, whose sensibilities align well with his affinity for his arctic homeland, with its abundant, unspoiled nature and deep connection to the earth and its creatures. Along with his wife, Janna, he is raising two fine sons, Django and Tashi, and is managing the largest recording studio on the Olympic Peninsula, Rainshadow Recording, which is developing into a destination for great artists from all over the world. When not wielding his instrument he can often be found somewhere riding a motorcycle.
