UPDATE: We have a new date!
Join us at 7pm, Thursday September 19th at WEA (59 Gloucester St) for a public meeting to discuss the role of community boards in Ōtautahi.
Guest speakers
Jenny Hughey: “The history and context”
Paul McMahon: “The opportunities and challenges of community boards”
Mike Davidson: “Community boards impact on our travel choices journey”
The speakers will be followed by a panel session responding to audience questions and comments.
A question people will be asked to consider in this interactive section is whether the community of organisations and individuals in our city working on climate, ecological and social justice issues pay enough attention to community boards and their role in our local democracy.
How can we all do better?
Information about the speakers:
Jenny Hughey is the immediate past Chair of Canterbury Regional Council and is the Co-Chair of Community Law Centres Aotearoa. She will outline when and how community boards originated and set the scene for us.
Paul is the current Chairperson of the Waitai Coastal-Burwood-Linwood Community Board, and Member for the Linwood Ward. He was previously on the Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board (2010-2016) including one term as Chairperson. He will consider questions such as who uses community boards? What for? What are community boards doing successfully as part of an open participatory democracy? What challenges are there?
Mike is a former city councillor for Papanui and chairperson of the Shirley-Papanui Community Board. He has been an advocate for travel choices in Ōtautahi Christchurch and will focus on the travel choices theme from his experience.
Please contact us if you have any questions! Look forward to seeing you there!
