Chess is having a moment.
From The Queen's Gambit to the explosion of online chess content, a whole new generation is discovering that chess isn't just a game, it's strategy, psychology, creativity and competition all rolled into one.
And now you can learn it too.
This friendly and engaging course introduces you to the fundamentals of chess in a clear, practical and enjoyable way.
Designed for complete beginners and those looking to refresh their skills, the course builds step by step through simple explanations and guided practice, helping you develop confidence from your very first game.
Rather than focusing on memorising complex theory, the course emphasises understanding how the game works, recognising patterns, and thinking logically.
Through a combination of explanation, puzzles and friendly gameplay, you’ll learn how to make better decisions, spot opportunities and enjoy the challenge of chess in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Also, chess can be a great mental exercise, particularly for older adults, as it can help maintain brain function and may support slowing cognitive decline.
A selection of recommended books and learning resources will be suggested during the course for those who wish to explore chess further and support their ongoing improvement.
The course is taught by Vraj Shah, an international-level chess player with more than 12 years of competitive experience, including state, national and international tournaments and the Commonwealth Games. His teaching style focuses on making chess simple, enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
This course runs for 4 weeks x 1.5 hours.
