Jenni Lyn Cooper will lead a weaving workshop called Nesting Nooks at Merryspring Nature Center on Saturday, February 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.It’s almost nesting season in Maine! Welcome the migrating birds home with your own handmade Nesting Nook teardrop basket. Imagine what the Baltimore Oriole might say to the Vireo when they see your handmade nest welcoming them home to your backyard!
These colorful, lovely, Nesting Nooks are handmade with locally gathered plant material, combined with yarn, lichen, tree bark, buttons, anything goes! Daylily leaves provide the weaving material, twined and woven in hazelnut, willow, or red osier dogwood, adding color and texture with yarn, lichen, even birch bark. We even have gathered cattail fluff, and have wool roving to line the nest for your special bird friends. You could even hang it inside to show as art in your home.
All materials are provided, but feel free to bring along anything you might like to include in your special nest, like yarn, beads, bark, moss, twigs, ribbon. Stitches and weaving patterns are taught in a dynamic creative space. Everyone’s Nest will be unique. Instruction will include making your own daylily cordage (plant fiber rope), which will add texture and is useful binding cord in projects.
Jenni Lyn brings a lifetime of fiber art to the table, harvests wild fiber everywhere she goes, from cattail to papyrus, palm and philodendron, daylily and iris, tree bark, vines, even found objects and beach stones. She loves to share ideas and technique for creating vessels of all shapes and sizes. Her newest love is growing aromatic sweetgrass for next year’s basket making.
Course fee is $45 for Merryspring members or $50 for non-members and includes all the materials, tools, and instruction. There will be a lunch break from 12-12:30 (please bring your own). All skill levels are welcome. Limit is 12 students. Pre-registration is required. To register, please email call 207-236-2239.
Merryspring is your community nature center offering walking trails, cultivated gardens, wildlife, and ecology and horticulture educational programs all year round. The park is located at the end of Conway Road, just off of Route 1 in Camden behind Hannaford Shopping Plaza.
