Nerikomi is a technique to create interesting pottery surfaces by combining multiple clays/coloured clays. The basic idea of the technique is the same with agateware and marbled ware; we create patterns in the clay body. In Japan, we have developed it further to create geometric patterns, floral motifs and cartoon characters etc.
The masterclass will give you an insight into the pattern making process in this Japanese technique. You will learn the basic rules, tips and tricks in manipulating clay and the basics of designing patterns while playing with colours and patterns.
In this one-day masterclass you will:
prepare your own coloured clays, learning to mix stains evenly and create subtle, harmonious tones
create 2–3 simple Nerikomi patterns suitable for beginners and ideal as a base for future development
watch a demonstration of essential techniques such as slicing, layering and assembling patterned blocks
practise constructing patterned slabs and shaping them into small bowls or plates.
Nerikomi developed during the Edo period (1603–1868) and influenced by Chinese marbling methods, Nerikomi focuses on building patterns into the clay, rather than applying decoration on the surface. The process involves preparing coloured clays, kneading or stacking them into patterned blocks, slicing them and assembling the pieces to form vessels or objects with a consistent internal design. Precision and careful timing are essential, as even small variations can influence the final result.
The technique is worth the dedication: vessels and objects that combine graphic clarity with fluid, natural movement. Nerikomi can be used to create everything from functional bowls and cups to sculptural pieces, models and jewellery – each with its own unmistakable character.
In this masterclass, we will explore the aesthetics and craftsmanship of nerikomi. You will work hands-on with the technique and create pieces in which the pattern doesn’t merely decorate the surface, but grows from the heart of the clay itself.
By the end of the day, you will understand how Nerikomi patterns are formed and feel confident continuing your own exploration of the technique.
About Mizuyo Yamashita
Mizuyo has a background in interior design in Japan. Her approach is grounded in the ergonomic approach and aesthetics she cultivated during that time and in the craftsmanship she learned from working alongside Japanese artisans.
The inspirations for her work come from a wide range of archaeological artefacts, everyday designed objects and the forms in nature. She also generates ideas from the materials, processes and history in ceramics and other crafts. In her work she tries to express elegance and beauty in the functional forms that match to our modern aesthetics while exploring the materials and the traditions of pottery making: combining the Egyptian form and Japanese decorating technique, the Roman form and Korean glaze and the style of English studio pottery and Chinese glaze etc.
Apart from doing her own ceramic pieces, Mizuyo also founded a ceramic studio called Tokobo based in London, in which she runs ceramic courses and workshops.
