Join us for a 6 week Intro To Nerdlesque & Character Workshop with Lyssa Strata! Leading up to a performance on performance on May 1st at the York Theatre!

About this Event

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
Vancouver's premiere Nerdlesque troupe returns to initiate a new generation of plucky Rebels into into the Alliance!

What's all this then?

Join your instructor/Alliance General Lyssa Strata as she takes you through a six-week progressive class to learn the basics of dance movement, the fundamentals of stage presence and performance, and some of the basics, history, and theory of burlesque.

This gender-inclusive, body-positive intensive for beginner to novice performers will give you an idea of what goes into creating professional-level production numbers that are fun, cheeky, funny, and created to your level to make you look your best!

This class culminates in a group performance in Geekenders' newest show, HOTH 2 GO!: A Sci-Fi Burlesque Variety Show' Performed at the York Theatre on Friday, May 1st, 2026....

Theme:

The Rebel Alliance are the fine folks who fight against intergalactic fascism with shimmies, shakes, and silliness! Often seen in previous Star Wars-theme productions, you can count on our orange-clad cadets to bring the glitter and glamour to the Resistance.

Style:

This piece will be a fun burlesque dance with influences from jazz, ballet, and musical theatre, with a nerdy twist.

What do you need?

Yourself, a person of any (adult) age, background, or gender(optional)

A desire to perform, an eagerness to learn, and a willingness to get outside your comfort zone!

A tolerance for puns

You will be guided through the process of creating a costume for this number: details will be discussed the first week of class.

When:

6:30pm - 8:00 pm

Friday Nights: March 20th - April 24th!

Showpony Studio - 206-2280 E Hastings St, Vancouver

Cost:

$150 (plus Eventbrite processing) for six classes, and a performance!

( E-transfer is also an option to save on those extra costs, just send an email/etransfer to [email protected]. We can also do payment plans upon request!)

Sponsorship:

We are offering one slot as a sponsorship for a BIPOC artist in our community, so please apply at [email protected].

In order to include more performers, we ask that sponsorships go to people who have not had a sponsored slot in Nerdlesque for Newbies before.

Proceeds go toward Geekenders, Showpony Rent, and the instructor’s time.

About The Instructor

Lyssa Strata (she/they) is a magnetic force in the world of burlesque and aerial arts, both as a performer and choreographer. Since her burlesque debut in 2013 as All of the Background Scenery (™) in Geekenders' first ever run of A Nude Hope, Lyssa has been enchanting audiences with a blend of ridiculous, sassy, and intensely awkward dance styles, sprinkled with a touch of Muppet magic.
Lyssa is eagerly channeling their innovative teaching methods into the Newbies Star Wars class for 2026, and ushering a new generation of sparkly dancers into the Rebel Alliance.
