Neon Skies: Why Space Looks So Colorful

From glowing pink nebulae to jewel-toned galaxies and psychedelic views from the James Webb Space Telescope, the Universe seems to come in every color imaginable. But are those colors real?

Join us for this Shapley series lecture; where we’ll explore where cosmic color comes from, and how astronomers turn invisible light into images that reveal the basis of the Universe. Along the way, we’ll discover that sometimes the colors are exactly what we would see, sometimes they aren’t, and sometimes “false color” tells us something far more interesting than a pretty picture.
