This March, Neon Dreams pays tribute to Jonathan Demme with his overlooked but completely essential, paranoia-laced neo-noir thriller Last Embrace—a deliriously satisfying mix of his Roger Corman exploitation instincts and the large-scope ambition of his later career. Excess is the name of the game, as Demme unleashes his own brand of De Palma x Hitchcock energy, with every minute gloriously dialed up to 11, barely giving you a chance to catch your breath from one setpiece to the next.Roy Scheider stars as a U.S. government agent recently released from an extended stay in an asylum following the murder of his wife. Back at work, he grows increasingly paranoid, questioning his own sanity as he encounters mysterious threats and surreal run-ins with dubious characters. Expect a parade of familiar supporting faces in increasingly deranged roles, including Christopher Walken, Janet Margolin, John Glover, Charles Napier, Mandy Patinkin, and the ultimate seal of quality: Joe Spinell.
What follows is a cinematic feast of tension and disorientation, packed with brilliant nods to North by Northwest and classic film noir, including an original score by veteran composer Miklós Rózsa (Double Indemnity, The Killers, Brute Force) and cinematography by Tak Fujimoto (Badlands, Silence of the Lambs). All of it builds toward an exhilarating finale at Niagara Falls, Ontario that has to be seen to be believed.
We are thrilled to present Last Embrace for the first time ever in a brand-new restoration, courtesy of Cinématographe Films. (BRENDAN ROSS)
