Necromancy 101

The veil is thin. So, let’s talk about the dead.
The word necromancy conjures images of forbidden books, séances, restless spirits, and things perhaps best left undisturbed. Its origins, however, are much simpler: from the Greek nekromanteia, referring to divination through communication with the dead.
And humans have been finding ways to communicate, honor, seek wisdom from, and maintain relationships with the dead for a very long time.
Join Circles of the High Sierras Temple for Necromancy 101, an introductory class and conversation exploring how different spiritual traditions have approached interaction with the dead and what respectful spirit work can look like today.
We’ll begin with some of the historical and cultural practices surrounding communication with the dead, with particular attention to traditions represented within CHST. Then we’ll open the conversation to modern practices, including ancestor shrines, graveyard work, spirit communication, personal experiences, cautions, boundaries, and best practices.
This isn’t about summoning ghosts for thrills or bothering whatever might be lurking in the local cemetery. Instead, we’ll explore how we can approach the dead with intention, respect, and an understanding of the responsibilities that can come with spirit work.
Necromancy 101 will be followed by our Ancestor Tea, where participants will have an opportunity to put some of these ideas into practice through activities including altar building and letter writing.
Content Note: This class includes discussion of death, deceased loved ones, ancestors, and practices involving the dead.
