This year, the San Juan College (SJC) Native American Center (NAC) invites students, families and community members to gather once again for two evenings dedicated to this cherished practice. On Wednesday, January 28, the NAC will host a Navajo Shoe Game Learning Session, followed by the full Navajo Shoe Game on Thursday, January 29, both from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the Suns Lounge.
Origin stories tell us that Késhjéé began long ago, in a time when day and night animals competed to decide whether the world would remain in darkness or in light. Through guessing, strategizing, joking and singing, the Shoe Game taught lessons about balance, cooperation and the importance of community. Today, that same spirit continues.
During the learning session, guests will explore not only the rules and strategies of the game but also the meaning woven throughout its songs, stories and playful misdirection. The learning session will feature a workshop led by Kevin Belin (Navajo/Diné), the Navajo Language teacher at Navajo Preparatory School. Belin is known for his ability to bring cultural teachings to life. He regularly shares his extensive knowledge through presentations, training sessions and workshops for both students and educators.
Then, on Thursday evening, the community comes together for the game itself. Teams gather around rows of moccasins and shoes, as players attempt to uncover the hidden ball while distracting their opponents with creativity and humor.
“Hosting the Navajo Shoe Game each year allows us to reconnect with a tradition that brings people together in a very special way,” says Brandon Ashley, Director of the SJC Native American Center. “It’s a chance to learn, to share stories and to experience a wintertime celebration that has carried our communities through generations.”
Both events are free and open to all, whether you wish to play, learn or simply enjoy the atmosphere. Food and refreshments will be provided, adding to the warmth of these communal gatherings.
