About this Event

Description: We’ll go on an adventure through the forests of Mason Mill, climb on rocks, look for critters under logs, and splash in the creek. We’ll be walking at least 1 mile, so be prepared to help your child if he/she needs it. Expect to get dirty and wet, so wear clothes and shoes that are appropriate for the activity and weather. Bring water bottles, snacks, and a change of clothes. Our trails and route are not good for strollers.

What to expect: Plan on getting dirty and navigating official and unofficial trails with Ranger Jonah on this kid-focused adventure. Here is the general schedule for this program:

  • 10:00 am - families gather, welcome, and introductions
  • 10:10 am - start our adventure; hike the "secret" trails of the park
  • 11:00 am - stop at a creek for unstructured sand, mud, and water play
  • 11:30 am - snack (bring your own) and storytime
  • 12:00 pm - arrive back at the trailhead

Program leader: Your guide will be Ranger Jonah McDonald, the DeKalb County Park Naturalist at Mason Mill Park.

Where to meet: Find Ranger Jonah at the South Peachtree Creek trailhead near the Mason Mill Tennis Center (McConnell Dr & Mason Mill Rd).

What to bring: Expect to get dirty and wet, so wear clothes and shoes that are appropriate for the activity and weather. Bring water bottles, snacks, and a change of clothes. This route is not appropriate for strollers.

Restrooms: Public restrooms near the playground are closed for the winter. Bathrooms are available at DeKalb Tennis Center when the Pro Shop is open (top of the purple pyramid).

Recommended ages: This program content is designed for ages 3-8 and is open to up to 15 kids (plus their adults).

Dogs: This program is NOT appropriate for dogs, so please leave your pup at home.

Weather contingency: This program will be held, rain or shine, unless conditions are dangerous.

Walking distance: 1-2 miles

Exposure: This walk is mostly under tree canopy, but a few sections are exposed to sun.

Trail surface & accessibility: This program follows a combination of single-track dirt trails and durable surfaces (concrete & boardwalk) and is not accessible for chair users or strollers. The dirt trails are less than 3 feet wide and have roots and rocks. Consider bringing hiking poles if your balance requires them. Questions if this program will work for your mobility?
