Native plants do more than beautify our gardens, they help cool our suburbs and support biodiversity. Now is the perfect time to start planting your native garden, so plants are flowering in spring for pollinators.
Join us at the Port Environment Centre for an evening of various community activities.
Here’s what’s happening:
4:00 – 5:00 pm | Make Garden Ornaments
Start the evening with a creative session led by James from Bugs n Slugs. Create your own butterfly or lizard garden ornament inspired by the creatures that live in our backyards that you can take home with you. All materials provided.
5:00 – 6:00 pm | Community Eco Discussion
Join a relaxed community conversation exploring perceptions of native plants and urban trees. Guided by this short article, we’ll discuss how greening our neighbourhoods can help cool our cities and create healthier habitats for people and wildlife.
Meet members of the local PoANT Trees group and hear about the work they are doing in our community.
Article : A solution to cut extreme heat by up to 6 degrees is in our own backyards
6:00 – 7:30 pm | Get planting with South Australia’s Native Plants
It is important to understand what our native plants need. Hear from experts Danny Millbanks (Northern Coastal Conservation Officer, Green Adelaide) sharing about South Australia’s coastal projects and about how they are overcoming challenges with seed germination. You will also get to hear from the Greening Rosewater loop, a local community group of how they are greening the neighbourhood.
As a community activity, we’ll make samphire seed bombs to support habitat creation in the Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary for migratory birds and plant propagation to go towards the Greening Rosewater Loop project.
🌼🌼 FREE Native Pollinator Plants 🌼🌼- Towards the end of the session, each attendee will receive up to 3 native pollinator plants to take home for their own garden!
