Join the Madison Nature Journal Club at Quann Park Community Gardens. This small space is packed with 140 garden plots which are used by the neighboring community. This is a great opportunity to closely observe, sketch, and wonder about the plants that our food comes from (and more!) We will be able to touch many of the plants to journal about how they feel and to look even closer. Here are more pictures of the gardens: https://www.quanngardens.org/pics-1
The event will start off with me giving some quick tips on interesting things to notice and ways to record them in your journal. Then we’ll split up to find what’s interesting to us, journal, and meet back up to discuss what we journaled about near the end of the event. I'm happy to spend additional time with folks brand new to nature journaling--it's easy to get started!
__________
DETAILS:
- LOCATION SPECIFICS: the gardens are at the southwest corner of Quann Park, right near the corner of Bram Street and Koster Street. The closest address is 354 Bram St.
- MEETING SPOT: Meet outside the gate of the garden near the parking lot--there will be a big whiteboard that says nature journaling. If you're late, wander the gardens and look for people with sketchbooks.
- PARKING: there is parking at the garden for about 10 cars. If that's full, park at the Quann dog park which is a 5-minute walk away.
- PUBLIC TRANSIT: the Koster at Bram stop is right around the corner, bus lines 63 and O. A bike path also borders the garden.
- WHAT TO BRING: drawing supplies. A pencil and paper works, or anything fancier. You may want to bring a sketching stool as there may not be benches in convenient areas.
- BATHROOMS: there are bathrooms within the wider Quann Park, though not adjacent to the gardens.
- ACCESSIBILITY - Terrain is a bit rough around the garden but paths are wide. A bike path borders one side of the garden, which should make this event accessible to folks who use wheelchairs.

WHAT IS NATURE JOURNALING?
Nature journaling is more than drawing or painting pictures--we also write questions and notes in our sketchbooks to wonder more deeply about nature. We’ll talk briefly about ideas of what to write, such as using the writing prompts "I notice... I wonder... It reminds me of..." You'll also get some nature journaling tips about ways you could document things that you may see at the event location.
