10 AM: Soil Sprouting for Everyone!
Simple, doable, and delicious! Grow fresh, nutrient-dense greens — fast and with minimal effort.
In this class taught by seasoned master gardeners and master food safety advisors, you will learn soil sprouting basics through step-by-step hands-on demonstrations and activities and leave with your own indoor garden container to grow your own sprouts at home. By the end of class, you’ll know how to:
Start and maintain soil sprouts
Harvest and store for best flavor
Use sprouts in meals for added nutrition
The University of Idaho Extension Boundary County is co-sponsoring this program, and all materials will be provided to participants at no charge.
About the presenter:
Alicia Alexander and Joan Poppino are both master gardeners and master food safety advisors with the University of Idaho Extension Boundary County. This duo is driven by a lifelong passion for learning and community service with well over 40 years serving their communities. Together, they thrive in the worlds of horticulture and food science, bringing diverse experience in gardening, food safety, and hands-on education to every project they lead. Their combined background supports a thoughtful, research-based approach to education and outreach.
12:00 PM: Fire Prevention for the Home
Sandpoint Firefighters will present important home safety information that will keep you and your family safe. This presentation will include recommendations for detection and suppression; kitchen, electrical, appliance and heating safety; and emergency preparedness. Access free smoke detectors and chimney sweeping equipment at the program. Fire extinguisher use will be demonstrated, and you might even get to practice using one.
About the presenter:
Sandpoint Fire Department staff: Troy Badeaux Engineer (25 years’ experience), Tennille Toussaint Captain (15 years of experience) and Connor Nelson (5 years of experience) will be conducting this educational program.
1:00 PM: Planning for a Bountiful Harvest
A walk through the garden from seed to plate. Learn the process for growing two vegetable crops, tomatoes and lettuce. Emily from Red Wheelbarrow Produce will take us through basic garden design, soil prep, and seeding, and work our way all the way to harvest, washing, and storage.
About the presenter:
Emily LeVine has owned and operated Red Wheelbarrow Produce, a 4-acre regenerative farm, since 2008. She sells all-natural plant starts, produce, and flowers at the Farmers’ Market at Sandpoint, her Selle Valley farmstand, and local markets..
3:00 PM: SEED: The Untold Story
Join us in viewing this documentary film that follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000-year-old food legacy. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. This film is about the importance of heirloom seeds to the agriculture of the world, focusing on seed keepers and activists from around the world to tell the story. The EBCL Seed Library will have seeds on hand to share with attendees to take home.
