Join us for an exciting and enlightening two-day event as the Berks History Center hosts its first-ever Native American Film Festival on October 17th and 18th. This festival offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history and astronomical achievements of North America's ancient inhabitants, particularly the Anasazi people of Chaco Canyon.
On October 17, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, attendees can watch two films. The first, “Sundagger,” explores the classic tale of the celestial calendar crafted by the Anasazi, who navigated the harsh Chaco Canyon environment with spiritual and material success a thousand years ago. The second film, “Mysteries of Chaco Canyon,” examines the enigmatic prehistoric structures and celestial patterns created by the Chacoan people in northwestern New Mexico, offering fascinating insights into their culture.
On October 18, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, the festival continues with “Written on the Landscape,” a film that uncovers the vast and intricate world of the Chacoans through stunning aerial footage and advanced LiDAR technology, revealing the true scope of their desert empire.
The festival will be moderated by BHC Trustee, Dr. Nancy Omaha Boy, who will guide discussions and Q&A sessions following each film. This is a wonderful chance to engage with the material, ask questions, and share reflections on the films’ themes and insights. You are welcome to attend one, two, or all three films, depending on your schedule and interest. The festival is FREE for all attendees, offering an accessible way to engage with this fascinating aspect of Native American history. About the Moderator:
Nancy H. Omaha Boy, Ph.D, taught Native Americans Studies at Rutgers, State of New Jersey University, for 11 years while serving as head of Faculty Development. She relocated to Berks County in 1988, to serve as RACC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs. Nancy is a member of a large Lakota family in South Dakota.
