How a Landscape-led approach is essential for people, place and nature
About this Event

Governments across the UK are committed to building new homes and improving the places where people live, and addressing the environmental crisis. The Welsh Government has a commitment of 20,000 new low-carbon social homes for rent by 2026, while in England, there is a target of 1.5 million new homes to be built during this Parliament. This is an opportunity to create high-quality, resilient, inclusive, and sustainable places that deliver long-term value for people, communities, and the environment.

To explore how this can be achieved, the Landscape Institute is hosting a series of national conferences across the UK. The third event in the series will be held at Cardiff University, School of Architecture, Cardiff, on Thursday, March 26, 2026.

This conference will examine how a Landscape-led approach can support the delivery of Wales and England’s housing and regeneration ambitions while simultaneously addressing the climate and nature emergencies, promoting health and well-being, and strengthening communities.

The Landscape-led Approach

A Landscape-led approach places the landscape at the heart of decision-making from the outset of built environment projects. It encompasses:

  • Placemaking: Ensuring developments strengthen community connections and improve quality of life.
  • Resilience: Enhancing the resilience of places in the face of climate and nature emergencies.
  • Sustainability: Underpinning the delivery of liveable places that unify policy, planning, design, and management.

By embedding landscape activity early in developments, the approach maximises economic, environmental, health, and well-being benefits for people, place, and nature.

This conference is designed for landscape professionals, developers, planners, housing providers, and local authorities.

Reasons to attend

By attending this conference, attendees will be able to:

  1. Navigate Policy & Compliance: Gain essential insights into current Welsh and English planning policy, legislation and best practice for housing and regeneration.
  2. Master Sustainable Design: Understand the value of early landscape involvement, embed a landscape-led approach, and apply key concepts like SuDS and Net Benefit for Biodiversity to achieve better planning and design outcomes.
  3. Secure Long-Term Value: Discuss how using landscape professionals can secure long-term investment for developers and local authorities
  4. Networking and Future Collaborations: Connect with decision-makers and engage with professionals across the built and natural environment.
  5. Enhance your skills and knowledge: This event is aligned with the LI's CPD, specifically strengthening framework competencies in planning, water management, healthy places, and place management.
