Overview
Join us for a carefully curated 60-minute specialist tour exploring a selection of outstanding Christian masterpieces at the National Gallery.
Rather than simply moving from one famous painting to another, we will examine each work through four connected lenses:
- The subject matter and biblical story
- The artist and their individual approach
- The historical world in which the painting was created
- Its religious and devotional significance
From the Annunciation and Nativity to the life of Christ, Passion, Crucifixion and Resurrection, the tour traces the Christian story across centuries of European art.
Along the way, we will uncover:
- Hidden symbols and visual clues
- Meaningful gestures and expressions
- The use of colour, light and composition
- Historical and theological context
- The different ways artists interpreted the same sacred themes
We will also compare paintings of the same biblical event, discovering how different artists could transform an identical story through their use of landscape, light, symbolism and emotion.
Some symbols may already be familiar. Others are much easier to miss: falcons in a procession of the Magi, unusual plants and animals, objects that foreshadow Christ’s Passion, or details that connect the Crucifixion with the Eucharist.
This is a focused, richly interpreted experience for visitors who want to look more deeply, understand more clearly and encounter familiar paintings with fresh eyes.
No previous knowledge of art history or Christianity is required. The biblical stories and their significance will be explained as we encounter them.
Artists We Will Encounter
The tour will feature a carefully selected group of masterpieces by major artists such as Duccio, Fra Filippo Lippi, Carlo Crivelli, Piero della Francesca, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Raphael, Nicolas Poussin and Caravaggio.
Rather than rushing through a long list of names, we will spend time looking closely at important works, exploring their biblical story, artistic choices, symbolism, historical context and religious significance.
The exact selection may vary depending on gallery displays, room closures, painting availability and the discussion that develops during the tour.

We will sometimes look at two or more paintings of the same subject. Seeing how different artists treated the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Kings or Christ’s Agony in the Garden reveals just how much interpretation lies behind an apparently familiar biblical story.
Most importantly, the tour is designed to give you a way of looking.
After our time together, you can continue exploring the National Gallery independently with a better understanding of what to notice, what questions to ask and how to interpret the Christian paintings you encounter.
We will pause regularly and use available gallery seating where possible. The pace is comfortable, although the tour does involve walking between rooms and some standing.
About Your Guide
Your guide, Dr Sahand Malek, is an independent researcher and collector with a particular interest in Christian art, visual culture and sacred imagery.
His research explores how artists have represented Christ, the Virgin Mary and the central stories of Christianity through painting, devotional objects and printed culture.
Sahand combines close visual observation, historical context, biblical narrative and religious meaning in an accessible and conversational way, helping visitors notice the details, stories and ideas that can easily be missed when exploring a gallery independently.
