Overview
Join Dr Sahand Malek for a one-hour specialist tour exploring some of the National Gallery’s most powerful seventeenth-century paintings.
From Moses hidden among the reeds and Elijah fed by ravens to King David, Saint Thomas and the death of John the Baptist, we will follow stories from the Old and New Testaments and see how Baroque artists made them feel immediate, physical and intensely human.
This is not simply a tour of famous paintings.
We will look closely at how the artists tell the story: how light creates drama, how gesture reveals emotion, how scale changes the experience of a sacred scene, and why different painters could interpret faith, doubt, suffering and divine intervention in completely different ways.
What We Will Explore
At each stop, we will connect four things:
- The biblical story: what is actually happening and why it matters
- The artist: who made the work and what makes their approach distinctive
- The historical world: where the painting belonged and who first encountered it
- The visual experience: how light, colour, movement and emotion shape the meaning
We will encounter prophets, kings, saints and ordinary people caught at extraordinary moments.
You may see works by artists such as Orazio Gentileschi, Artemisia Gentileschi, Guido Reni, Guercino, Caravaggio and Claude.

About Your Guide
Your guide, Dr Sahand Malek, is an independent researcher and scholar with a particular interest in Christian art, visual culture and sacred imagery.
His research explores how biblical stories, Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints and other figures of Christian tradition have been represented through painting, devotional objects and printed culture.
Sahand combines biblical narrative, close visual observation, artist biography, historical context and religious meaning in an accessible and conversational way.
