As March is Women's History Month, how better to celebrate than to learn more about our local women who made such a difference to our area. Nancy Shukaitis is one such woman who carried a movement on her back, breaking the norms of the time for women, and leading the fight to save our area from becoming flooded by the Army Corps of Engineers' Tocks Island Dam project.
After six generations, her family lost their land to the project via eminent domain. She showed her love of the area by fighting to defeat the dam project. The end of the project left approximately 70,000 acres of Federal government-owned land that is now the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
Presenting the story is journalist and author David Pierce, whose 2023 non-fiction book, Tocks Island: Dammed If You Do, chronicles the history of the project from inception to cancellation.
Special Guest - Jennifer Shukaitis attending. Jennifer is the granddaughter of Nancy Shukaitis.
