NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program. This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition. These conditions may include, but are not limited to, anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar or other mental health conditions.
NAMI Family-to-Family can help you and your loved one.
One in five people in Delaware and Morrow Counties experiences a mental health condition, but even that number doesn't measure the impact of mental illness. A mental health condition affects more than just the person who has a diagnosis. Families and friends also experience the impact of their loved one's mental health as it impacts relationships, roles and responsibilities.
Families face additional stress as they seek appropriate treatment and provide care for their loved one. The stigma of mental illness can also cause isolation. Families dealing with mental health diagnoses often struggle alone, at a time when they are most in need of support and understanding.
NAMI Family-to-Family can help provide that support.
This free educational class provides family members and friends with information to help them better understand their loved one's diagnosis and its impact. Through the course, we'll discuss the biological basis of mental health conditions, treatment options, as well as practice communication skills that can help improve your relationship with your loved one.
The knowledge and skills you'll gain through the course have been proven to contribute to better coping skills as well as decreased anxiety for families. Families who took the course also reported higher levels of problem-solving skills. (For more information on the research supporting these outcomes, view NAMI national's article here or Dr. Lisa Dixon's research here).
We understand because we've been there.
Our instructors understand what it is like to care for someone with a mental health condition. In order to lead a NAMI Family-to-Family course, instructors must have personal, lived experience caring for a loved one with a mental health condition. They understand the stress, worry, and emotions that accompany a mental health diagnosis, because they've been there. They understand the impact that mental health conditions can have on a family because they've personally experienced it.
You're not alone. NAMI can help.
“NAMI Family-to-Family has been a blessing to me! I learned I am not alone. I can talk about mental illness; I’m not ashamed. Most importantly, I have become less angry and more compassionate to my husband.”
NAMI Family-to-Family can provide you with a road map to help you take the next steps as you learn to care for your loved one and yourself. Whether you are dealing with a recent diagnosis or have been living with your loved one's mental health condition for a long time, we can help. We want to help you gain a better understanding of your loved one's condition. Together, we'll identify helpful resources, and also care for yourself and your own needs.
In Family-to-Family, NAMI will:
Provide current information about serious mental illnesses and the most current research available on the biological aspects of these illnesses.
Provide the most current information on the possibilities for living in recovery, including a variety of treatment strategies currently available.
Promote empathy by creating an understanding of the subjective, lived experience of a person living with mental illness.
Provide specific training in the areas of problem solving, listening, communication techniques and handling crises and relapse.
Give caregivers the ability to learn to cope with worry, stress and emotional overload.
Provide guidance on locating appropriate supports and services within the community and offer tips of advocating for those supports and services.
No matter where you are on the journey of supporting a loved one with mental illness, NAMI Family to Family can help. We invite you to join us to learn more about how you can support your loved one, yourself, and your family.
“NAMI Family-to-Family saved my life, my son’s life and our relationship."
