Discover Iznik ceramic art with artist Nagihan Seymour and create your own hand-painted tile and plate using traditional Iznik patterns such as roses, tulips and carnations.
In this 5-week course, students will first be introduced to the fundamentals of Iznik Ceramic Art, materials used in this art form and their function. After which they will be shown biomorphic patterns such as floral and rumi motifs, and painting techniques in the Iznik style. A ceramic tile (14x14cm) and a ceramic plate will be painted by attendees using traditional underglaze paints. Our instructor will glaze and fire them after the class. Students will collect their work once they are ready.

What is the Iznik ceramic tradition?
Iznik pottery is named after the town of Iznik in western Anatolia where it was first made. From the last quarter of the 15th century until the end of the 17th century, this decorated ceramic was one of the most important decorative materials embellishing Ottoman structures ranging from palaces to mosques.

Useful information
Five week course with sessions taking place on consecutive Mondays on 23, 30 September and 7, 14, 21 October 2024.
The course should be booked in full, individual sessions are not available.
All levels of ability and experience are welcome.
The course will take place in the dedicated Learning Centre at Leighton House.
As part of the workshop, participants will also have access to the museum and historic house.
Ticket price includes all materials and the glazing and firing of the tile and plate.
Please wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting slightly messy.
