Na Eng presents The Art of Saving Democracy

For more than four decades, renowned advocacy organization People For the American Way has inspired and mobilized Americans to defend freedom and justice. With this kit, they share their wisdom and empower all of us to actively participate in our democracy.

The Art of Saving Democracy features the work of 20 renowned American artists—such as Roy Lichtenstein, Shepard Fairey, Carrie Mae Weems, Vincent Valdez, and Deborah Kass—and includes:

• An activism guide with a foreword by Jamie Lee Curtis
• 50 postcards that can be used to urge friends to vote or be part of a postcard-writing campaigns
• Five mini posters to display on store front windows and community bulletin boards
• Four sheets of colorful stickers to spread important messages

Also included are 30 conversation starters and a practical how-to guide that teaches essential skills for activism. Whether you’re taking to the streets or taking up a pen, The Art of Saving Democracy can help you be more effective when you express yourself, champion our shared rights and freedoms, and resist hate and authoritarianism.

Na Eng is a social impact executive and award-winning storyteller who champions powerful narratives to move ideas and change norms to accelerate progress for greater social impact. She is the chief creative officer at People For the American Way, where she leads special editorial and innovation projects. Previously, she held senior communications roles in philanthropy and global humanitarian aid.

Eng refined her instinct for storytelling over two decades as a journalist in New York City. Producing for NBC, PBS, and CNBC, she traveled the globe to translate complex economic trends and social issues into understandable human narratives. Her pieces reached millions of viewers and earned more than a dozen prestigious national honors, including an Emmy Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Documentary.

She is a graduate of Columbia University, a Fulbright Scholar, and the recipient of a Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. When she was five years old, Eng and her family fled the killing fields of Cambodia and resettled as refugees in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she was raised by a single mother.

Q: Do I need to register?

A: Please do if at all possible! Use the registration button above. Registering ahead of time helps us with scheduling, book ordering, and other decisions that are made several weeks prior to the event. The more info we have ahead of time, the better.

With a registered list, we can also easily and directly communicate event updates such as postponements or cancellations.

If you are unable to sign up online, please call or visit the bookstore and register with a bookseller.

Walk-ins are always welcome, but seating decisions are made based on registered attendance and seating priority is given to registered attendees first.

Q: Are in store events free?

A: Yes, Magers & Quinn events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Q: Are masks required?

A: Masks are not required to browse in the store or at most events. Some events may come with a request for masking for the health and safety of the author. If so it will be noted here whenever possible.
